I Couldn't Stay

This is a song written for the memory of my Father-in-Law Comer Sheffield who died of Cancer during our 1998 Tour...over 250 people attended his funeral, all the people who he had helped with something during his life, in our Community here in Midland City, Alabama... he was and „is“ a good man, he is in Heaven now because of his simple and humble belief in Our Saviour Jesus Christ...

I met you in Alabama
I'd just married your daughter
You were sitting on the cender block steps you built
Your ol' dog came barking
I gave him bothof my sandwiches
You said „Are you a preacher“
Then you offered me a drink

Ah the rivers seem so muddy
And the years just keep on rolling
Now we have a bunch of children
And the money goes real quick
I'd love to stay and help you
I know you know about the road
Sorry about the Karma I couldn't pay
That's why I couldn't stay

My father was from Kansas
He grew up in the wheat fields
Felt he had an obligation, to feed the hungry world
War took him to the South Pacific
He died last year of cancer
Ruth Broadhenst was his second wife
She followed St. Patricks Day

You taught me how to whittle
An' you taught me how to whistle
And you show'd me how to skate and then to drive
You took me to Paunka City
My God the girls are pretty
We drank about a half an ocean
Then the highway took my soul

Ah the rivers seem so muddy
And the years just keep on rolling
Now we have a bunch of children
And the money goes real quick
I'd love to stay and help you
I know you know about the road
Sorry about the Karma I couldn't pay
That's why I couldn't stay

Love will keep you guessing
Winter winds will test you
Broken cars will break you
And she'll probably break your heart
There's a billion miles of black top
I'd recommend hot coffee
If they ever question of me
Tell them why I couldn't stay
